Learn
about the history and culture of the Philippines
with a tour of the various museums in Manila.
Begin with a visit to the 18th century Casa
Manila inside the old walled city of Intramuros,
with its beautiful inner courtyards, colonial
furniture and furnishings. Proceed to other
interesting museums that are rich in historical
and colonial culture, like Bahay Tsinoy which
celebrates the Chinese heritage in all aspects
of Philippine life, and San Agustin Museum
with its frescoes, santos (religious wood/ivory
statues), liturgical robes, and gold and silver
ornaments. Visit the National Museum and see
the famous Spolarium, Juan Luna's wall-sized
mural of Roman gladiators, considered one
of the best works in the world, as well as
paintings of 19th century masters and sculptures.
Then see the National Museum of the Filipino
People for a recreation of the wreck of the
San Diego which sank in battle off Batangas
in 1600 and retrieved earthenware, stoneware,
porcelain and weapons. Also on display are
prehistoric finds including tools, ornaments
and the skull of Tabon Man, the earliest known
human inhabitant of the Philippines (16,500
years).
